GVSA Fall 2014 Recap
u10 Girls Red
Coach Andy DeWitt

The girls did a very good job this year and I am very proud of them. I thought that the girls did a very good job working as a team this year and passed the ball very well. As I said at the beginning of the season it was my full expectation for the girls to move up in the spring and finishing 2nd place will allow us to do that.

I had a great time coaching the boys this year. They worked very hard and deserved a 1st place finish! I could not be more proud of them. One thing I love about this group of boys is how well they play as a team, especially with this being their first season together. As I said at the beginning of the season it was my full expectation for the boys to be moved up to the 2nd division and they went above and beyond what I expected, again I am very proud of them for their hard work. All year we had 4 things that we focused on with the boys: Play with Confidence, Make quick and smart passes, Be aggressive and Get the ball wide.

The team finished 6-2 in the second division losing by only one goal in each of those losses. Every player scored at least two goals this season! They all played goalkeeper in at least one game. The team trained on 1v1 moves all season. Each player attempted several dribbling moves in games including the scissors, pull-push, and step-over which appears to be a favorite with most of the players.

The boys had a great season as a brand new team for the Club. They focused on possession -- not whacking the ball! They also worked on playing out of the back and playing the ball wide. The quality of play improved every game. The strength of the team was their defense, the boys only allowed 7 goals all season!

Coach Larry De Leon

This was a great initial season for this team. The team consisted of 8 first-year players. They showed great development in both skill and understanding of the game. Some of the strengths of this team included aggressive play and solid defense. The girls started off the season with a win in their first game and continued to compete hard in every game thereafter and ended up with a 2-5-1 record. Great job girls!

This team showed great development an passion for the game. Some of the goals of the team included high-pressure defensive play, possession based attack, and an overall increase in their tactical awareness. The girls competed hard every game and displayed good sportsmanship and character as well. The team also competed in the TBAYS Autumn Classic tournament in Traverse City and represented the club well finishing with a 1-1-1 record including a tough loss to a VARDAR team from Detroit. The team battled through some injuries early on and ended up finishing in 3rd place in the Elite division with a 4-2-2 record.

From our first game to our last game this year the girls improved a lot. Our defensive positioning and passing looked much better as the season went on. The girls created many chances but were unable to find the back of the net. We will continue to work on our shooting and moves in the winter and find a way to score some more goals.

The boys were amazing this fall, finishing 8-0-0 and easily winning the second division in dominant fashion outscoring their opponent 34-9. We gave up 5 goals in our first game after leading by 3, but after that game, we only gave up 4 goals the rest of the season. No more than 1 per game. Our stingy defense was the key to our success but our offense really progressed as the season went on. Our effort was so high that we consistently won balls higher up the field which let our offense do its thing. We showed a great ability to adjust our attack this fall based on what the defense would give us. There were times when our players would have to be creative in 1v1 situations and other times where we had to connect several passes or get the ball wide and cross for our goals. The guys wiillingness to soak up all the soccer knowledge they can has really pushed this team to another level this fall. It was a highly successful fall season and we hope to continue that through the winter months and into the spring.

The girls played some really fluid soccer throughout the season even if the game results weren't what we expected. Finishing with a 2-5-1 record, we were consistently the more skilled team on the field. At this age group, playing the right way doesn't always translate into wins but we were pleased with the progress we got out of the group. The girl's effort throughout the season was awesome. Playing several games with only one or two subs, they stuck together and kept fighting and kept working on the things we were talking about. We had great individual performances from all of the girls who all worked really hard to improve as individuals and teammates. As the season went on, the chemistry of the group improved and it showed by us being able to string together 10+ pass sequences leading to chances. The improvement this group showed from the start to finish was really fun to watch.

The focus for the season was to build out of the back and maintain possession. We challenged the girls to play it back to the keeper - which made a lot of our parents nervous! We were the only team in our division that employed this tactic; and we developed confidence and composure on the ball. The girls improved each week in a very competitive division. The team really came together as a group and they're poised to compete at a very high level in the Spring. The team finished second in league scoring with 24 goals.
