GVSA Fall 2014, Week 7
u10 Boys Red
TNT West U10 Boys Red finish season with a "Dynamite" 5-0 win - Defense was the big story once again this week as Luke and Aiden combined for 8 saves in shutting out the Rascals this evening at Helder Park. This guarantees we will finish the season with the least amount of goals against at 7 (less than 1 per game @ .875 per game). The scoring today was started off by Aiden on a very nice assist from Mason. The second goal came from Silas off of Aiden's corner kick for the assist. The next two goals were scored by Aiden unassisted giving him 3 for the game. The only goal of the second half came from Luke on a direct free kick that beat the keeper cleanly. Once again the boys played an amazing "total" soccer match. They controlled every aspect of the game by possessing well, passing well, defending well and finishing well.

Parents, thanks again for your support not only this weekend but also for the entire season. I truly enjoyed getting to know the girls and seeing them develop as individual players and as a team. The girls demonstrated a commitment to improving and worked hard all season long. Our motto for the year was to play hard, play smart, play together, and have fun. I think we accomplished that!

On Saturday we faced a tough USA squad and despite giving up 3 goals, I felt the effort was there and we did some positive things. All 3 of the USA goals were scored by an individual effort versus great team play. A couple of them were a result of our defensive over pursuit and unfortunate bounces that led to breakaway situations. On a positive note, we battled hard the entire game and created some quality scoring chances - hitting the post several times.

On Sunday I felt we displayed some of our best possession soccer of the year. Our emphasis in practice last week was recognizing opportunities to hold the ball and wait for the play to develop around us looking to switch the point of attack versus forcing the ball into places where the numbers were not in our favor. We did a solid job of doing that. We definitely had the greater number of scoring chances as well and played hard all the way to the end.

Our final record was 4-2-2 which puts us in 3rd place in the Elite division.

Hard to believe that the last week of the season is upon us. If I think about where the girls started in terms of their skill and awareness of the game compared to now, it's clear to see that they have progressed well. I think this last game vs. USA was a prime example. The first time we played this team we were out hustled and gave up 4 goals. This time we matched them step for step in terms of aggressiveness and had equal if not more scoring chances than they did and only gave up 2 goals. The girls did a better job of their spacing and are becoming more confident in taking shots around the goal. The goal we scored was a result of players being in the proper position to score - we call this "framing the goal" - making sure we have players by the near post, center, and far post. There were also several instances when we had our heads up and looked for a pass versus just kicking it. This week I will review with the girls all the key skills/principles we learned this season and see if we can put it together for a good showing this Saturday.
